Peninsula High is being recognized as one of 275 California Gold Ribbon Schools for 2017. Schools applied for the award based on a model program or practice their school has adopted that includes standards-based activities, projects, strategies, and practices that can be replicated by other local educational agencies.

Pen High designated our Science, Math, Engineering, Research, Technology (SMERT) Program as our model program on the Gold Ribbon application. Peninsula has a comprehensive SMERT Program that has received national recognition for its integration of academic coursework, hands-on application, community involvement, and industry partnerships. Our SMERT Program provides students the skills and experiences that prepare them for college coursework and allows them to explore career opportunities.

The Gold Ribbon validation committee spent two hours in the Kelly Johnson Fieldhouse in late March reviewing the SMERT programs and speaking with students. The award reflects our school’s success in creating a positive learning atmosphere for students. Such success is a direct result of dedicated, creative, and talented staff, and a supportive
school community.
