Assignment

Hello Students.

So here we are, experiencing a school closure for at least the next three weeks.

We are all in unknown territory during this pandemic and figuring things out as we go along about how to continue our lessons.

So, let's do this for English:

  • Vocabulary (Eng. 2) and Roots (Eng. 2H)

    • on hold...don't worry about it

  • Agreement

    • on hold...don't worry about it...I may post some video lessons to finish off the unit once I figure out how

  • 1984

    • Reading

      • keep reading the novel...we'll hold discussions via Discussion Board on turnitin.com on the same dates originally assigned

      • Reading due dates

        • Monday, 3/16, Part 2: Ch. VI--X

        • Monday, 3/23, Part 3: Ch. I-VI

      • FYI: The part of 1984 in which Winston reads Goldstein's book is challenging reading. Read it in small doses and try jotting down the main idea of each paragraph. That is how I figured out the meaning of the material. The section basically explains a couple of the slogans' meanings.

    • Discussion

      • Discussion Board on turnitin.com

        • the boards are set up; you can begin adding comments any time

        • I'll leave the boards open for a few days after each reading due date, so you have time to get to this as well as return as often as you wish to see what your classmates have shared

    • Miscellaneous

      • I'll probably guide you through some brainstorming in the next week or two...will figure out how I want to do this soon...

      • if the closure gets extended beyond Spring Break, I'll make plans to walk you through a writing assignment

  • Writing

    • Do some daily writing. See the handout I posted for that. I link to it at the bottom of this post. It's titled School Closure Assignment. I'll also include links to a couple samples I'm writing along with you.

Finally, I posted an assignment on turnitin.com under the Discussion tab. It's intended to help us all work through any thoughts/feelings we might be experiencing about this pandemic and school closure. Would love to hear from you and keep us all connected as we stumble together through this unknown territory.

Stay safe, everyone. Be careful. Practice safe distancing until the dangers pass.

Assignment

Hey All! Missing you. Hope you are all doing okay under the circumstances.

I want to switch over to using Teams rather than Edlio. Teams is very easy and useful once you get familiar with it. Many of you are already using it with other teachers, and I think we'll all need to switch to it to do a better job of this online teaching.

I've created an outline of information and instructions for you.If you read through that, it will get you onto Teams and explain enough basics to get you going for now. Email me if you have any problems and I'll help you out.

I'd like you do use Teams for the Part 3 discussion rather than turnitin.com. Same format of posting and replying, just a different platform.

Hoping to "see" you virtually for a discussion soon.

P.S. In the survey, some of you asked when we'll be back at school. Last I heard was 4/20. But as you know, we are living day by day with changes coming at us every hour. So let's make the best of this online method. I've got ideas for how to add some creative flair and enjoyable work (ha!) to the online learning.

P.S.S. If you haven't created some kind of routine, everything I've read about how to make remote work/education successful says to first create a routine. For me right now, that means getting cleaned up and dressed when I awake, completing a virtual yoga class in the mornings, and then work (which means schoolwork for you). After dinner, I take a walk. That's the extent of my routine, but it is better than how lost I felt the first 2-3 days. In between all that, I take breaks, do household chores, play with my cats, and I spend A LOT of time texting and virtually meeting with friends and family.
