Begin filming for your Video Log Covid-19 Documentary. We want to eventually edit it down to about 30 seconds a day, but shoot more than that. I'd say you need about 2-5 minutes of footage a day.

WRITE YOUR DAILY MONOLOGUE FIRST. Edit it, work on it. Don't try to wing it. Read it off your computer while you record, etc...

Remember to set your phone to "most compatible" or similar. Use your computer's cam if you have one as well. Remember lighting and background.

You can include a range of people in this, from people in your house to friends you are texting/video chatting with. Perhaps one day you interview a friend/relative living in a different place. Get creative

Shoot footage and record voice over with your phone's voice memo recorder.

Log your footage and audio. Keep organized with your files and clips. Expect a tutorial on logging footage. For now, use excel or word to note what you recorded (file names, types and length, as well as subject).

Goals:

Document what is happening to you.
How are you living this new reality.
Take us through your moments... fear, boredom, new challenges, insights, little wins, etc... are all good.
Capture video from your computer screen/game console as well. We are moving to a virtual experience. Document it.
Balance footage of yourself with narrated shots of your world now.
This should be raw... we are trying to capture the reality, excitement, and the monotony of our new socially distanced lives.

If you want to screen record on a Mac, use Quicktime... it may produce an audio video lag but no worries. Also try OBS:

My new routine pt. 1 (2 day theme)

Address your new routine, and any new structures (or lack there of) that you are trying to build your daily life on.

Address how you are doing without the structure of school. How disciplined are you at school work and other tasks?

We are going to revisit my new routine a few times, so when you write your VO make sure you tell us how many days we are into the school closure.

You do not need to send me anything right now! Those who emailed me (Gio, etc...) their day 1 work, thank you for being on top of it. But just keep organized at home. Record and write now, we can edit and turn in later.

Expect a video update this week with some skills.

Email if you are unclear or just having a hard time (with my class or in general).

Set the scene, do some exposition.

*Remember to write out your Monologue..... even through this should be raw and real... we want it to be polished.

Shoot and edit a 5 by 5 with the following theme and shot list:

Theme: Journey from one place to another- your actor will go from one place to another outside.

Shot list:

Shot 1: Locked Down Full, Medium, or Close Up ... set the mood.

Shot 2: Pan or Tilt (one or the other… pan is horizontal move, tilt is vertical) start the actor's journey

Shot 3: Tracking (walk the camera but try not create too much other movement, and think about how much, and what else, is in your frame. You can try to block the shot creatively with columns or extras moving between your subject and the camera).

ALSO>>> BE SUPER CAREFUL AND PLAN YOUR ROUTE SO THAT YOU DON’T TRIP OVER A BENCH OR ANYTHING ELSE WHEN YOU OPERATE THE CAMERA.

Shot 4: Pan or Tilt (one or the other… pan is horizontal move, tilt is vertical) bring them in to stop

Shot 5: Locked Down Full, Medium, or Close Up to close out the journey

This assignment is a quick jam. Plan it, shoot it, and edit it. Keep it simple, keep your camera moves clean and clear. You will have 10 minutes to wrap it up on Monday. Work with a partner, and give us a full movement.

Our next assignment will focus on motion and continuity editing. On Friday we will talk through a series of shots and think through creative ways to capture the story of movement. Please watch the following two videos on tracking shots. There are so many good resources on youtube and vimeo for filmmakers! We will talk about some good quality channels as well as some other high quality training resources you should know about.

Studio Binder makes some really good instructional videos. But remember, it is a long for add for their shot comp/storyboard software. With that said, watch the video below. It gives a great overview on why we move the camera:

Now that you are thinking about why (and what the basic moves are) we move a camera, lets focus on the tracking shot. Our next assignment is focused on motion as story, using the tracking shot as a backbone.

Ok.... lots to understand.... blocking is an advanced idea, but if you have time today round it out with this video on how to set your character into a scene.... this is advanced but I think you all can start to think more about it.

Watch the Shot Types slide show, and take 10 photos covering as many shot types as you can. You will need to edit them to 16:9 aspect so shoot with space!

30/30 Project:

Take 30 photos that document 30 minutes of time. This should not be POV. Think cinematically.

Use a variety of shot types but remember that the core of film work is Medium Shot and tighter. Make sure you use Establishing Shots to initially establish location, and then again if you change location. Think frame. Show us the most important act/action/emotion in each frame.

It is not 1 shot / minute, but rather cover 30 minutes of time.

Set your camera to 16:9 if you can so that you don't have to worry about crops. If not, crop to 16:9 or if you want to 2.35:1

There will be an indesign template and we will also put these into a premiere timeline.
