Coach Mike Liebig - Lifetime Service to Wrestling
Peninsula High Wrestling Head Coach Mike Liebig was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame during the California Chapter induction ceremony in April. What an impressive event! It was held at the Laguna Beach Community Center with 400 people in attendance. This induction ceremony was sold out and the inductees past and present were impressive. The past inductees and attendees included past Olympians, All-Americans, long-time coaches, and successful business people.
Coach Liebig wrestled in college as he earned his degree in Education. He served as assistant wrestling coach for Leuzinger High, Duarte High and Torrance High before landing the Head Coach position at Torrance High which he held from 1986 through 1998. He then moved to PV Peninsula High where he has served as the wrestling head coach since 1998. He was also a PE teacher at Peninsula until his retirement in June 2017. Coach Liebig has been recognized as Coach of the Year four times.
Coach Liebig has served on the CIF-Southern Section Wrestling Advisory Committee since 1994 and founded Club House Wrestling that same year. He has been responsible for the biannual realignment of the six CIF-SS wrestling playoff divisions since they were adopted in 2002. He also lead to the increase of CIF Divisional medalists form 6 to 8 in 2017.
Coach Liebig was recognized as an Educator of the Year in 2008 and is listed in the Who's Who in American Universities.
