  1. Discuss the significance of the heroic code of “comitatus”in Beowulf,considering specifically the actions of Beowulf as a young warrior, Wiglaf as a young warrior, and the cowardly warriors who flee at the dragon fight.

Comitatus was a Germanic friendship structure that compelled kings to rule in consultation with their warriors, forming a warband. The comitatus, as described in the Roman historian Tacitus's treatise Germania (98.AD), is the bond existing between a Germanic warrior and his Lord, ensuring that neither leaves the field of battle before the other. The translation is as follows:

Moreover, to survive the leader and retreat from the battlefield is a lifelong disgrace and infamy

Comitatus, being the agreement between a Germanic lord and his subservients (his Gefolge or host of followers), is a special case of clientage and the direct source of the practice of feudalism. Partly influenced by the Roman practice, exemplified in the Marian Reforms initiated by Gaius Marius, of a general distributing land to his officers after their retirement, the Germanic comitatus eventually evolved into a wholesale exchange between a social superior and inferior. The social inferior (in Feudalism, the Vassal) would pledge military service and protection to the superior (Lord). In return, the superior would reward the inferior with land, compensation, or privileges.[1]

The Germanic term for the comitatus is reconstructed as *druhtiz, with Old English forms dryht and druht, and Scandinavian drótt.[2]

  1. Consider two of the following as symbols: Herot, Grendel's claw, the cave, or the dragon's treasure-hoard. ( what do these things mean or stand for beyond themselves) Asymbolis an object that represents, stands for, or suggests an idea, visual image, belief, action, or material entity. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, or visual images and are used to convey ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon may be a symbol for "STOP". On a map, a picture of a tent might represent a campsite. Numerals are symbols for numbers. Personal names are symbols representing individuals. A red rose symbolizes love and compassion.
  2. How does the poet use the theme of revenge in the poem? Consider the motivation of characters such as Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon, as well as Beowulf.
  3. Other than Beowulf, who is your favorite character in the poem? Why?
  4. The significance of Hrothgar’s sermon in Beowulf (lines 1700-1784) Hrothgar delivers this speech in his royal hall Heorot, where the Geats and the Danes are celebrating Beowulf’s victory over Grendel’s mother. This victory has finally freed the Danes of the monsters which had been terrorizing them for twelve years. Hence, there is much rejoicing and feasting over the victory as Beowulf and his warriors are feted and rewarded by Hrothgar. Beowulf had earlier given a speech recounting the details of his fight with the monster. He then presented the golden hilt of the sword salvaged from the monster’s den to Hrothgar. In accepting this relic, Hrothgar launches into a long moralizing speech of advice to Beowulf. In his speech Hrothgar highlights the code of the heroic world and the serious repercussions if one were to break or disregard this heroic ideal. According to this code, the relationship between the king/lord and his men, known as thanes/warriors, is very important. It is the responsibility of the thanes to defend their lord and his lands and also to fight his wars. This relationship is one of mutual loyalty, trust and respect. The thane vows his loyalty to his lord and eventually becomes his companion. In return,what is the importance of Hrothgar's sermon? Cite at least two specific points that he makes and how they affect our understanding of Beowulf.

Senior Reflective Essay
Reflective Essay Outline:
Paragraph 1: Who I am:

A. Your Personal Reflection—Explain what you have always known about yourself. What have you been interested in or involved in since you were a small child?
 Example—Future Chef: Ever since I was a young child I’ve been interested in cooking.When I was little, I loved helping in the kitchen and watching my grandmother cook. I especially loved to help bake cookies and cakes. As I got older I learned to cook meals and enjoyed trying new recipes and cooking for my family.

B. Displays knowledge of your learning style, personality, interests, skills, and values
 Learning Style Example—Future Chef: I have a Tactile Learning Style, this means that I learn best when I can use my hands. I do well in classes where I’ve gotten to learn by doing. I love cooking because the only way you can learn to cook is by actually getting in the kitchen and doing it. At the Skills Center this year I learned how to prepare meals in a professional kitchen setting which is a lot different than cooking at home. It can be hard work, but I enjoy moving around in a fast paced environment.

Paragraph 2 Personality Example—According to the Human metrics Assessment, I am an extrovert and I enjoy being around other people in social situations. I like to make sure everyone is having a good time.
 Skills Example—I have always had good people skills. I like meeting new people and getting to know them. I get along well with others and this is important when you are working in a restaurant.
 Interests Example—I am interested in French cooking, music and art. Everyone says cooking is an art, I like creating fancy meals and making the food look as good as it tastes.
 Values Example—I value my family, friends, and being creative. I love cooking for holidays and special events.
When I feel sad, I like to make a batch of cupcakes and decorate them in fun ways. I share the cupcakes with my friends and it cheers me up. Sharing what I love is an important value of mine.

Paragraph 3. Discuss your “Road to Graduation”:
 Example: My road to graduation is rough. When I was in elementary school my family moved four times and I had to change schools. It was hard always being the “new kid” in class. It seemed like I was always behind.By the time I got to high school I was more interested in my friends than in school. I had a great time skipping school and fooling around. That was until I woke up and realized I was failing all of my classes. I always thought I could get caught up, but I found out I was so far behind that the only way I could graduate was to leave Bay and start going to Lewis and Clark H.S. At first I didn’t know if I would like it or not, but it has been a good choice. I am actually going to graduate this year and that makes me happy and my family proud.

Paragraph 4 and 5 : Where I am Going/My Career and Life Goals:
Life Goals: Describe the kind of lifestyle you would like to have in the future.
 How would you like to live?
 Would you like to have a family of your own?
 What is important to you?

Please type in business letter format and bring a SASE to class on the day this is due.

ENGLISH 4 SYLLABUS
MS. LISA DOHREN AND MS. NATALIE KELLY, PVPHS, P225

College Prep Senior English is a culmination of four years of high school language training. It is for those students who plan, whether immediately after graduation or not, to continue their education beyond the minimum. Therefore, the purpose of this class is to prepare the student for the specific kinds of writing, thinking, and research required at the college level. The curriculum is literature and standards based, but with emphasis on the refinement of written and oral expression, and especially on the development of the writer's personal style. We will be using various poetry, short stories, and novels as a springboard top issues and ideas relevant to the human condition and to the daily navigation of our individual lives.

Required reading may include the following (we will also be reading for our response to literature project):

* Beowulf- Seamus Heaney

* Non-Fiction/Fiction Articles

* Hamlet- William Shakespeare
Dracula-Bram Stoker

The Historian- Kostova
Hound of the Baskervilles-Doyle

Metamorphosis-Kafka
* TheRoad- MacCarthy

The Martian-Weir

A Tale for the Time Being-

Alien

Seven Eves

Snow Crash

In addition, each student will complete, independently, at least two novels of reasonable "literary" merit, and provide for the class response to literature demonstrating a real involvement with the piece. College Prep Senior English will also continue to explore the nuances of grammar, diction, sentence and paragraph construction; it will heavily emphasize vocabulary development.

Grading in the course will be based upon a simple point scale; letter grades will reflect a percentage. Please refer to the comment key and rubrics provided on Aeries when reviewing your essays. Full-length essays will be worth 250 points- however, because many institutions prefer a UC Subject A-style number scale, the translation will be as follows:

* A+= 6 = stellar, innovative, outstanding

* A = 5 = an A paper worthy of a B or better in any college course.

* B= 4 = a B paper, shows a sound grasp of topic, adequately presented

* C = 3 = a C paper, shows grasp of topic, writing contains moderate flaws

* D/F = 2/1 = a D paper, serious gaps in writing, thinking, or comprehension of topic

No valid effort will go un-rewarded.
