Last Day To Submit Work
  • This Friday 6/12 at 12:00 noon is the deadline to submit work.

OPTIONAL Final Exam
  • Last week there was an online sign up for the OPTIONAL final exam.
  • Students that signed up for the OPTIONAL final exam have been contacted and have until Friday to take the test and submit answers to Mr. Spalding
  • If you did not sign up for the optional final exam but would like to take it, please email Mr. Spalding at [email protected] to request to take it.
  • This optional final exam will be worth 10% of your final grade and will only count if it helps your overall grade.

This week we will continue reviewing optics.  This is a relatively common topic in college science courses.  A basic understanding of circuits is important in many areas of science outside of physics.

Monday - May 11

The AP Physics 2 Exam Is This Wednesday at 9:00 am
  • First off, you all are going to do very well on this exam.  You are prepared for this and you know your physics.
  • Be sure to log onto the exam 30 minutes early.  Exam starts promptly at 9:00 am
  • Spalding recommends to submit your work into the exam by copying and pasting.
    • You should have 2 windows open on your computer screen.  One window for the exam,  the other window for your word processing document that you will copy & paste from.
  • Before day of exam:
    • 1.  Print your E-Ticket out so you have your AP ID all set to go.
    • 2. Prepare a word document file that has your AP ID and initials in the corner.  
    • 3.  Print the College Board equation sheet so you have it to refer to during exam (see my previous posts for link)
    • 4.  Get your calculator ready.  You can have calculator during exam.
  • Realize that the College Board has said that this exam has more questions than can reasonably be answered by the average students.  So, you should expect to feel a time crunch.
    • It is important to be mentally prepared for this so you remain a strong test taker.  DO NOT feel like you are failing if you don't finish each question.  It is entirely possible to answer only 70% of the test and still do very well.
  • Exam Breakdown:
    • Question # 1 - you will have 30 minutes total (including the 5 minutes allotted to upload answers).   This will be a quantitative/quantitative translation question.   Basically, you will need to use words to explain your understanding of physics.  You will be given a situation that involves numbers / measurements and will be asked to explain the physics behind an answer.
    • Question # 2 - you have 20 minutes total (including the 5 minutes allotted to upload answers).  This will be a "paragraph length response" question.  You will be given a situation and asked to write about the physics behind the the given situation.
  • DO NOT work up until the very last minute.  You must give yourself time to copy and paste your work into exam.  Timer will turn red when you have 5 min remaining.  If you do not submit by the time clock goes to 0:00, then your work will not get graded.
  • Day of Exam - Get out the following:
    • 1.  E-ticket with AP ID
    • 2.  College Board Equation Sheet. (see my previous posts for link)
    • 3.  Calculator

The College Board is now allowing teachers to release FRQs from practice exams.  These FRQs are IN ADDITION to the released FRQs posted on the College Board website that you have already studied.  
 
Until this year, practice exams were only allowed to be used in the classroom and were not to be released.  But now they are able to be released....so here you go!!!   Below are links to the FRQs from all practice exams.  Please note:

This week we will begin working on the AP Physics 2 "Progress Checks" that are found in AP Classroom on the College Board website.  All students in Mr. Spalding's AP Physics 2 course have already registered with the College Board and are able to access AP Classroom where these "Progress Checks" can be found.  This week's assignment will be done entirely on the College Board website and will NOT be turned into Schoology.com.

The College Board has posted amazing instructional videos for all topics covered on the AP Physics 2 exam.   These videos do a GREAT job giving condensed lectures on all the topics we covered this year.  Here is the link to these videos.

Submitting Homework on Schoology.com
  1. I need to correct many homework grades on Schoology.  I did not realize that some of you submitted assignments as multiple files.  As a result, points were taken off for incomplete work when all work was in fact submitted.  Please give me a few days to go back and regrade the homework sets.  If there are still errors on your homework scores on Wednesday, please email me so I can fix it.
  2. For future assignments, please try your best to submit only one file for each assignment.  For example, if you did work on 3 separate pages for a particular assignment, please save these pages as one file and upload to Schoology. 
  3. Remember, homework assignments are graded on effort & completion.  On the AP exam you will need to show ALL WORK.   Approach your homework sets as if they are an AP exam.  Here is what you should do for each problem:
    • Show diagram of the problem that includes all variables (given values and non-given values)
    • Showing equation being used with no numbers substituted into the equation (JUST THE EQUATION)
    • Rearrange the equation algebraically for the variable that you are solving for.
    • Substitute numbers into equation and solve for final anwser
    • Box final answer and be sure unit is shown
Class Focus & Some Positive Thoughts On This Year's AP Exam:
  1. As you know, our focus for the next 6 weeks is to prepare for the AP exam.
    • AP Physics 2 exam is Wednesday May 13 at 9:00 am 
  2. I believe that this year is a GREAT opportunity to do very well on the AP Physics 1 exam.  Here is why I believe this:
    • Several topics have been removed from the course description and there is less material to master before exam day.  See my postings from before spring break for a more detailed breakdown.
    • The test will be all free response (no multiple choice) and this is AWESOME.  The vast majority of students do significantly better on free response exams compared to multiple choice.  
    • The test will be short (under an hour and only 2 FRQs) which means that students will not be facing test fatigue.  AP exams usually take 4 hours and are mentally exhausting.  This year you will be able to stay fresh and sharp through the entirety of the exam.
  3. Before spring break, we covered the following released AP FRQs.  If you have not given honest thought to these questions, you really need to do so.

Today, the College Board released details for how AP testing will be run this year.  To read about all the details, go to this link.  
 
This is very helpful information and gives our study of physics the structure needed to finish the school year with a goal in mind.  To this end, below are important details for the remainder of this course.
  1. Grading For Remainder of Year:
    • Because there will be no traditional midterm & final exam in class, I am modifying the grading outlined on the course syllabus as follows:
      • Homework, Notebook, Labs = 25% of final grade
      • Participation = 10% of final grade
      • Quizzes = 25% of final grade
      • Assignments During School Closure = 30% of final grade
      • Final Exam Via Zoom Conference in late May / early June = 10% of final grade
    • Assignments in the weeks ahead will be extremely focused to avoid busy work and maximize student success on the AP exam.  All assignments are to be turned via Schoology.com.
      • Goto www.schoology.com. and join our AP Physics 2 class using this access code:   BV5T-PTNK-QNCF4.    You will see all my assignments listed.  This is where you will submit your homework for grading.  Remember, HW will be graded on effort & completion.   Be sure to include beautiful diagrams... the key to physics is diagrams of the problem with all essential details!!!
      • The first set of assignments are due Monday 3/23 (see Monday 3/16 posting for details)
  2. Topics On AP Physics 2 Exam
    • The College Board has removed topics from course outline.  This is great news because we did an awesome job covering the topics that will be on the AP exam (and the topics that were removed were honestly the boring ones)
    • The topics that will be on the AP exam are:  Fluids , Thermodynamics, Electric Force / Electric Fields / Electric Potential, Circuits (RC & DC), Magnetism / Electromagnetic Induction
    • The topics that will NOT be on the test are:  Optics, Quantum Physics, Atomic Physics, Nuclear Physics
  3. Our Focus For The Remaining Weeks Of AP Physics 2
    • We are going to focus on AP Physics 2 material from the College Board and will begin with the 5 released AP Physics 2 exams.
      • You should already have these 5 released exam printed out because I gave extra credit for doing so.  However, if you do not have them, you can print them from here
      • Please note that the College Board also provides solutions & grading rubrics for all of these released AP FRQs (not a bad idea to just print these out as well.... you should be referring to them in the weeks ahead)
    • Given that not all topics will be on this year's AP exam, the following is a summary of the specific questions that we will be looking at from these 5 released AP FRQs
      • 2015 -- only numbers  2, 3 & 4
      • 2016 -- only numbers  1, 3 & 4
      • 2017 -- only numbers  1, 2 & 4
      • 2018 -- only numbers  1, 2 & 4
      • 2019 -- only numbers  1, 2 & 3
    • Beginning Tuesday, we will start with 2015 AP FRQ # 2
      • You will turn in your work for this FRQ on Schoology.com by Tuesday evening (before Wednesday)
      • I will create a video where I go over this problem in detail and will post on YouTube.  I will also provide a link on this page to the video.  You should only watch this video after you have made significant effort on your own first.  
  4. Spalding's Office Hours
    • Beginning on Tuesday 3/24, I will be holding office hours on Zoom from 10:30 to 11:00  Monday thru Friday (not including spring break.... I want us all to relax during this time)
    • I will be available via Zoom during this time to answer any of your questions.
