Friday 5/15 Message

Happy Friday!!!

If you have not yet finished the assignment for Gatsby chapter 5, you should do so today.  I realized that I had not posted a folder for this assignment on turnitin.com, but it is up and ready for your submissions now.

I have also posted an assignment for chapter 6.  It asks you to read a short section and respond to one of my favorite quotations in the book.  Give it some thought.  I am curious to read your ideas.  This assignment is due to turnitin.com on Monday.

As always, email me or post to the discussion board on turnitin.com if you have any questions.  Have a great weekend.

Wednesday 5/13 Message

Good Morning.

Today I have posted your assignment for Gatsby chapter 5.  Now that we know about Gatsby's history with Daisy and the way they felt about each other before he had to go off to war and she decided to marry Tom, we can see that Gatsby is trying to reunite with her.  He knows that she and Nick are friends (and distant relatives), so he asks Nick to invite both of them over for tea so they can reunite.  Your reading for today describes the reunion.  I hope you enjoy the awkwardness.  See the assignments page for the details.

Have a great day!!!

Monday 5/11 Message

Good Morning.

I hope you all had a great weekend.

Today and tomorrow, we will be looking at chapter 4 of The Great Gatsby.  On the assignments page, I have posted the pages that I want you to read and some questions that I want you to answer.  They are due on Wednesday, but we are going to be moving on to Chapter 5 on Wednesday morning.

We are skipping past the beginning of Chapter 4, so I will fill you in on what we are skipping.

- After they finally meet at one of Gatsby's parties, Gatsby takes Nick to lunch.  He seems to want Nick to like him, so he tells him the story of his life including how he made all of his money.  He talks fast and includes some confusing details, so Nick doesn't know what too believe.  Then, Gatsby pulls out a picture of him at Oxford University in England and a Medal of Honor from World War I, so Nick thinks there might be some truth to the story.
-When they get to lunch, they meet a man named Meyer Wolfsheim who seems to be a business associate of Gatsby's.  Nick's conversation with Wolfsheim is uncomfortable because Wolfsheim clearly has done illegal things to make money.
-This leads to the story told by Jordan Baker that you will be reading.

Email me or post to the turnitin.com discussion board if you have any questions.

Have a great day.

Friday 5/8 Message

Happy Friday!!!

Hopefully, you are all making progress on the two assignments due today.  Please don't forget to submit them to turnitin.com by the end of the day today.  If you are having any problems, feel free to email me or post on the turnitin.com discussion board.

I have posted a new assignment for today.  It will only take about 10 minutes, and I think you will enjoy it.  The Great Gatsby has been made into a movie very successfuly twice.  The first time was nearly 50 years ago.  I have posted links to the same part of chapter 3 in each of the two movies.  Watch and enjoy.

Have a great weekend.

Wednesday 5/6 Message

Good Morning.

Today we are going to move ahead to chapter 2 of The Great Gatsby.  The assignment for this chapter will be due Friday along with the writing assignment from yesterday.

The assignment asks you to read the first four pages of the chapter and then skip to the last page.  Of course you may read the pages in between, but you do not have to.  They describe the details of an apartment party, but you will read about the most significant event when you get to the last page.

Of course, you may email me if you have any questions.  Have a great day.

Friday 5/1 Message

Good Morning Everyone.  Welcome to May!!!

Yesterday you submitted notes on three characters who will play major roles in this story.

Nick Carraway is the narrator.  He views himself as honest and non-judgmental, two qualities that we can appreciate in a narrator because we will get the whole story through his eyes.  He also seems a bit out of place in the super-rich setting of the story.

Tom Buchanan comes from a VERY wealthy family.  He grew up entitled and as the center of attention even through college where he was an athlete and overall big man on campus.  Consequently, he comes across as quite arrogant.  Nick says that Tom seems to think that his opinion is the most important because he is stronger and more of a man than whoever he his talking to.

Daisy Buchanan, Tom's wife, we don't get to know as well at first.  She is attractive with an alluring voice, but we don't get to see much of what is behind her beautiful eyes until later in the story.  Tom and Daisy present themselves as being the kind of perfect that people imagine and expect when they see such wealth.

In today's assignment, I want you to read the conversation these three characters and Jordan Baker, Daisy's friend, have the evening Nick goes to visit.  Some of the conversation might seem oddly random, but remember to read in the voices of the characters.  Tom is confident and a bit of a bully.  Daisy acts flighty and superficial.  Nick, although he is among friends (actually, Daisy is a second cousin), feels uncomfortable and out of place.

I will also post a couple of questions I want you to answer and submit to turnitin.com by Tuesday.

Remember that you may email me or post questions on the turnitin.com discussion board if you have any questions.  I hope you have a great weekend.

I hope you are all doing well today.

I have created a folder on turnitin.com so you can submit the assignment that is due today.  The folder is titled "Gatsby Character Notes."  Please make sure you submit them by the end of the day today.  If you are having problems, click the "Discussion" tab on turnitin.com.  It will take you to a discussion board where you can ask questions and I will get back to you.  I will be checking the board regularly all morning.  Of course, you may also email me if you have any questions.

Have a great day.

Wednesday 4/29 Message

Good Morning.

I hope you are all doing well today.

Your challenge for the day is to finish the assignment that was posted yesterday including the reading from The Great Gatsby and the questions about the reading.  Please submit your responses to the questions to turnitin.com by the end of the day today.

I know that some of the language might be challenging, but try to get a visual of the Buchanans' house - it is spectacular.  Also, try to get a sense of the characters of Nick, Tom, and Daisy.  They are going to be important to the story.

I hope you enjoy this.  I think it is a beautiful piece of writing.  Let me know if you have any questions or if you need any help.  You may email me or post to the discussion board on turnitin.com.

Have a great day.

Tuesday 4/28 Message

Good Morning,

Today we are going to look at The Great Gatsby.  Remember that whenever we start reading, the first thing we need to do is engage our senses so that we can imagine a picture of what is happening.  The first visual I want you to have is of the setting.  The book talks about West Egg and East Egg in a way that might be a bit confusing.  On today's assignment page, I will post a link to a map that should help.  The other visual I want you to have is of some of the characters.  Right away, we start to get to know three important characters.  Nick Carraway is the narrator, and he visits Tom and Daisy Buchanan.  For today's assignment, I want you to take notes on these three characters.  I will post guidelines on the assignment page.

Also, I am going to create a discussion board on turnitin.com.  This will be a place to post any questions or insights you might have about the book.  I will check it regularly to read your posts and help any way that I can.

Check out the assignment page to see the pages that I want you to read (yesterday, I posted the link to the free ebook) and the questions I want you to answer.  Please type your responses and submit them to turnitin.com by the end of the day on Thursday.

Email me or post a message on the discussion board of turnitin.com if you have any questions.  Have a great day.

Monday 4/27 Message

Good morning.

I hope you all had a great weekend.

This week, we are going to begin looking at a novel that I think you are going to like.  It is titled The Great Gatsby, and it was written by an American author named F. Scott Fitzgerald.  Today, I have posted on the assignments page two links.  The first is a link to a free ebook version of the novel.  If you have a copy of the book and prefer to use it, that is fine with me, but if you do not have a copy, you may use the ebook for free.  You might want to click the link and then bookmark the page, so you can access it easily as we move forward.  The second link is to a youtube video that introduces the historical context and some of the themes of the book.  The video is short and hopefully will get you a little bit excited about the book.

Let me know if you have any questions or issues.  Have a great day.
