Friday 5/1 Message
Good Morning Everyone. Welcome to May!!!
Yesterday you submitted notes on three characters who will play major roles in this story.
Nick Carraway is the narrator. He views himself as honest and non-judgmental, two qualities that we can appreciate in a narrator because we will get the whole story through his eyes. He also seems a bit out of place in the super-rich setting of the story.
Tom Buchanan comes from a VERY wealthy family. He grew up entitled and as the center of attention even through college where he was an athlete and overall big man on campus. Consequently, he comes across as quite arrogant. Nick says that Tom seems to think that his opinion is the most important because he is stronger and more of a man than whoever he his talking to.
Daisy Buchanan, Tom's wife, we don't get to know as well at first. She is attractive with an alluring voice, but we don't get to see much of what is behind her beautiful eyes until later in the story. Tom and Daisy present themselves as being the kind of perfect that people imagine and expect when they see such wealth.
In today's assignment, I want you to read the conversation these three characters and Jordan Baker, Daisy's friend, have the evening Nick goes to visit. Some of the conversation might seem oddly random, but remember to read in the voices of the characters. Tom is confident and a bit of a bully. Daisy acts flighty and superficial. Nick, although he is among friends (actually, Daisy is a second cousin), feels uncomfortable and out of place.
I will also post a couple of questions I want you to answer and submit to turnitin.com by Tuesday.
Remember that you may email me or post questions on the turnitin.com discussion board if you have any questions. I hope you have a great weekend.
Mr. Hall
