The award winning PVPHS literary magazine - Beard Full of Butterflies - will be published in late May 2025. We are currently selling advance copies ($30 each). THANK YOU so much for supporting the Beard Full of Butterflies. It is a wonderful piece of literary magic! It has amazing photos, drawings, doodles, poems, short stories, and more, all created by the students of PVPHS.

JOIN LITMAG
Beard Full of Butterflies is entirely student-run. We would love to have your help! Please talk to your counselor about adding the Literary Publications class. It’s a fun class and a great way to connect with other people who love art, writing, and creative expression, and you don’t need any prior skills or experience! While this class does count for credit and is a UC-approved elective, it is a fairly light workload and during the regular school year, meets only once a week at lunchtime (except for a couple weeks in February, where you will be asked to come in every day). If you have any questions about the class, please email [email protected] or email our advisor, Mrs. Betsy Okamoto, at [email protected].

FAQs
  • What are the submission deadlines?
Specific dates have not been set, but submissions will likely open sometime in October and close sometime in February. It’s best to submit early!
  • When will I hear if I’ve been accepted?
You will be notified of your acceptance or nonacceptance into the magazine sometime in late Spring.
  • I submitted a physical piece last year, and it was never returned to me
We are planning to return all of last year’s submissions once school reopens for in-person classes. If you need your work before then, please contact [email protected] or [email protected]
  • Can I submit more than one piece?
We encourage it! Submit as many as you like. Get your friends to submit too.
  • Can I submit untitled or anonymous work?
No, we cannot accept untitled or anonymous work. Please include your name and title with all submissions.
  • Can I submit work that includes violence, sexual content, swear words, or other triggering or serious topics?
Each piece is judged on a case-by-case bases, but we try to keep all pieces within a ‘PG-13’ rating. Violence, swearing, and sexual topics should be limited accordingly. However, work that comments on serious subjects such as social issues or personal struggles is fine. If you are unsure about your piece, submit it with a warning label or contact us.
  • Do I have to have any experience to join lit mag?
Nope! You don’t have to be an artist or writer, or have any publishing experience, to join the lit mag team.
  • Why is your magazine called Beard Full of Butterflies?
Our magazine’s title comes from the poem “Ode to Walt Whitman” by Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca; “Not for a moment, Walt Whitman, lovely old man, have I failed to see your beard full of butterflies.” One of the most influential Spanish poets of the twentieth century, Lorca’s life was tragically cut short when the fascist regime of Francisco Franco marked him as a threat and killed him. In his poem, Lorca honors Whitman’s greatness and timelessness, qualities we hope our magazine achieves.
