Scotland 2018

The Peninsula High School Drama Department has been selected once again by the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF) to be one of forty North American Educational Theatre representatives to perform at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

GIRLS LIKE THAT - by Evan Placey

Buzz. Click. Pop. Flash. An email. A message.

When a naked photograph of Scarlett gets sent to everyone in her small school and goes viral, she becomes the center of attention for all the wrong reasons. But as rumors run wild and everyone forms an opinion, Scarlett just stays silent.

Girls Like That is Evan Placey’s urgent and explosive play that explores the pressures on young people today in the wake of advancing technology. This play tackles the important subject of how teens are to cope in a world of digital immediacy, where everything is public and permanent.

Palos Verdes Peninsula High School is excited to bring this important new work from Evan Placey to the Edinburgh Fringe.
Specially commissioned by Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Theatre Royal plymouth and West Yorkshire Playhouse, the play was revived by Synergy Theatre Project and the Unicorn Theatre, London, in 2014.

Air Travel

We are flying on British Airways flight 282 out of LAX at 3:30pm on July 27.

Reminder, each student/family is responsible for getting themselves to and from LAX.

To accommodate check-in and security, I would like to meet at the Group Check-in for British Airways at 12:00pm on July 27. (3 hours is recommended for all International travel and a little extra time is suggested for groups)

We fly first from Edinburgh to Heathrow, and direct from Heathrow to LAX on August 10th. Our return flight is British Airways, flight 269, scheduled to land in Los Angeles at 7:20pm. (Note: if you are returning separate from the group, you will be contacted directly by AHSTF)

As you can see from documentation, while in London, we are staying at Bankside House, 24 Sumner Street, London SE1 9JA

In Edinburgh, as discussed, we are in Pollock Halls - University of Edinburgh student housing.

Attached Itinerary

The attached itinerary is tentative and there have already been some adjustments to it that will be reflected in our final itinerary that we will receive on the ground, but it does give you a pretty good sense of our schedule while traveling. (One thing to note: the itinerary has a different departure time - we are confirmed to be flying at 3:30pm on flight 282)

Maps with locations on attached tourist documents marked can be viewed here:

Parent Meeting We will have a final meeting for parents (and students) at 5:30pm on Wednesday, July 18. Not a mandatory meeting, but a chance to go over the paperwork attached in this email and answer any questions you may still have. The meeting should end between 6:15 and 6:30.

We are getting close, and I think we are all getting real excited for the trip.

Thank you for the continued support.

June 6, 2018 Update
Reminder, final payments were due yesterday. If you have not yet made your final payment, please send a check made out to PVPHS DRAMA BOOSTERS along to the school tomorrow with your child.
Earlier this afternoon I reached out with confirmation of registration info from AHSTF which included:
Name, Birthdate, Allergies & Medical Conditions, Passport Info and Deviation Info as necessary.
If anything was incorrect or missing, please reply to that email by Friday. Many of you were still missing your Passport information and AHSTF does need that ASAP.
June 1, 2018 Update
Reminder everyone that your final payments are due this Tuesday, June 5 and the total per student is $6,922
Please make any payments by check or credit card by this time.  If you are unsure of how much you owe individually, student account updates were handed to each student at yesterday's meeting.
If you not able to make full payment by Tuesday, you need to contact me by Monday so we can discuss options. We can't get our itinerary until the final payments are made so arrangements will need to be worked out.
Thank you, and please let me know if there are any questions. Have a great weekend.
April 24, 2018 Update
Good morning all.
Last week account printouts were handed to each student. If there are any questions, please do ask. Many travellers are falling behind on payments, either March or April deposits. Please send those in, or contact me ASAP.
Students, we will be meeting this Thursday at lunch. Remember, the Thursday lunch meetings are one of the places where you are earning points towards the fundraising shares. Uncleared absences from the Thursday meetings does hurt your score there.  The number/221 written on the bottom right corner of the Account Update.
Alrighty kids, see you Thursday!
Mr Cohen
April 16, 2018 Update
Thank you everyone who donated to, and helped work our Rummage Sale. I think it went very well.
Students: We will not be meeting this Thursday due to DTASC School Showcases.
Parents: Today, I will be handing out account updates to students during class. Please look at them and let me know if you believe I have made an error in recording of your payments. There was a $1000 payment due March 3 and another $1000 due April 10. Some have not made the March deposit yet, and many have not made the April payment yet. The balance payment is not due until June, however you can make multiple payments between now and then. If you have not made your March or April payments, please do so at this time.
We have a couple of Comedy Sportz matches left to sell concessions at, but as of now those are the only fundraisers left. Remember also, students earn Funding Points for working fundraisers and attending lunchtime meetings (and lose points for being a no-show at the lunch time meetings without giving notice), and those points will determine each students' share of the fundraising. Current fundraising point shares will be written (out of 221 possible at this point) on your individual account printouts. If there are any ideas for additional fundraising ideas before the end of June, please don't hesitate to share at the next Thursday lunch meeting.
Mr Cohen
March 13 Part 2
One other item I left out of yesterday's email, the deadline to request any sort of trip deviation (for return flights only) is TODAY, March 14.
To request, please fill out the Deviation Request Form:
If you have already filled this out but not received a response from AHSTF, please be patient, it takes time for them to sort through all the responses.
March 13, 2018 Update

Good evening all -

I know I had hoped to meet with all students at lunch this week, but unfortunately I have been called into another WASC meeting Wednesday, so I have to push the LAMDA meeting from Wednesday to Thursday. So, no AHSTF (Scotland) meeting this week :(

Enough with lunchtime acronyms, some business for you all.

  1. $1000 payments were due last week. For those of you who made the payment without a reminder from me, THANK YOU! If you are enjoying this gentle reminder, please submit checks to PVPHS DRAMA BOOSTERS this week. Or, you can always make online payments through the Gift of Performance.
  2. I will provide individual student account printouts next week.
  3. Scripts are in progress. I should have at least the first few scenes for you all when we return from Spring Break.
  4. Fundr App - in this week’s Drama Department update you will receive more details - but the PVPHS Drama Boosters are now beneficiaries of the Fundr App. So, download Fundr and select PVPHS Drama Boosters as your charity of choice!
  5. CHIPOTLE FUNDRAISER on March 20. Flyers are in programs for Heathers (closing March 18), on and will be available in the PAC on March 19 and 20. You need to present the paper or digital flyer at the Chipotle in Peninsula Center for us to benefit.
  6. YOGURTLAND FUNDRAISER on March 22. Thursday, March 22, all order between 4 and 7pm at the Yogurtland in Torrance Crossroads will benefit Peninsula Drama and our trip as well.

Lots of great stuff happening and we aren’t even at Spring Break!

Thank you and see you this weekend at Heathers. Let me know if you are unable to join us for the lunch meeting next Thursday in S20.

January 16, 2018 Update

Scotland - January Update

I believe that we have a final number in for our trip (assuming that airfare doesn’t fluctuate too much).

Total cost per participant is $6,880. This includes our departure for London on July 27, transfer to Edinburgh on July 31 and departure from Edinburgh on August 10.

If you have not yet made your January $1,000 payment, please do so as soon as possible. Checks made payable to PVPHS Drama Boosters

In the next week or so, I should have our rehearsal schedule for the production locked in and ready to send out. I need to confirm a couple of things before I can finalize everything.

Thank you, and please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.

January 3, 2018 Update
Happy New Year all
All sorts of info is coming in over the course of this week, but wanted to send a quick reminder or two.
1. Students - Tomorrow (Thursday) is a non-mandatory meeting at lunch in S-20. It will mostly be show discussion and the Dramapalooza post-mortem.
2. A reminder that the next payment - $1,000 is due this Friday. Payments can be made online through the Gift of Performance or via check (made out to PVPHS Drama Boosters).
3. Thank you everyone for helping out and participating in our December 15/16 fundraising. The Barnes & Noble gift wrapping went very well and Dramapalooza was a pretty fun event.
Thanks everyone for your contributions to both.

August 22, 2017 Update

Good afternoon all:

I wanted to give a reminder that the next payment for our 2018 Scotland trip is due on September 2. $500 with checks made payable to PVPHS Drama Boosters. Students can bring checks to school with them in an envelope, or you can mail them directly to me at the school. Please include student name on the Memo line of the check.

If you have not yet sent in the initial $150 deposit due in July securing your spot on our trip, you can still sign up. By bringing in the $150 next week when school starts.

There is a mandatory student meeting next Tuesday at 3pm in the PAC. This is a meeting for students only, sorry parents, and we will wrap up around 4pm

If there are any questions about the trip, don't hesitate to reach out.

After our roster is locked in by mid-September, any families not participating with the trip will cease to receive Scotland emails from me.

Thank you, and welcome back to school.

July 8 Update:

July Update and Info from AHSTF

We are confirmed to be on AHSTF Tour Session 1. While that does not include exact dates just yet I can say that in 2015, that meant a July 31 departure and an August 14 return.

If you have not yet sent in your initial $150 deposit but are still interested in the trip, please let me know. It is not too late to get in on the excitement! If you are still on the fence, don’t hesitate to email me with any questions you may have.

Group #: 44367-25         Trip ID: 146057

Credit Card Payment; Group id is necessary for making credit card payments for those of you interested in doing so. When paying by credit card, you can call the AHSTF office at 888-882-4783

Any member of the team can take a credit card payment.

(AHSTF accepts MasterCard, Visa and Discover – unfortunately they do not accept American Express)

Please give our group number when calling to make a payment.

Additional Online Fundraising:

“AHSTF participants have long told us that the most effective way to raise money is to ask a lot of people!  For years, AHSTF groups have sent request letters to family and friends. While this is effective, it takes time (and money) to customize letters and mail them, and then requires even more effort from donors to fill out a form, write a check, and remember to mail it in. People are busy and requests get forgotten! With that we would like to offer our online fundraising tool that instantly generates colorful requests that are electronically sent to prospective donors. The best part is, with a few clicks, donors can make a donation in a matter of minutes.”

Send out as many gift or performance requests as you can! Send it to family and friends and relatives. Many of our performers have raised hundreds of dollars towards their individual trip payments through this method. Here’s how:

Step One: Visit and click on the Gift of Performance tab, on the right side of the screen.

Step Two: Follow the directions listed.  (Your trip ID number is:  146057)

NOTE:  Gift of Performance can also be used to make deposits for the trip.  Simply have a parent send the e-card to themselves and you will be able to make payments for your participation.

If you have not yet sent in your initial $150 deposit but are still interested in the trip, please let me know. It is not too late to get in on the excitement!
