Lennon he also covered his ID badge with a piece of tape and wrote John Lennon's name over his own he applied for a gun permit and the very same day purchase a 38 caliber pistol on October 29th he said goodbye to his wife Gloria and boarded a plane for New York City that he was going there to research and write a check orange book quotes ever going to call mleko the gecko how about a little gecko that rode a bus in Honolulu and and was going to be teaching children how how how to make change Chapman had no intention of finding a pub he arrived in Manhattan then checked into the Waldorf he spent the next week sticking out the Dakota apartment building on the upper west side where John Lennon live on November 4th the stalker moved Hotel out cut less than half a block from the Dakota on West 72nd Street he tried to buy bullets but without a New York City gun permits no store would sell them to so he left New York who did Georgia to visit a childhood friend Dana Reeves who was now a sheriff's deputy Reeves was a gun buff and had exactly what Chapman wanted 38 Caliber hollow point bullets designed to explode like winning Iran grenades inside of Target Captain told his friend that he was going back to visit New York I needed them for protection Reeves gave his friend the bullets Chapman return to Manhattan Mark came back after seeing the movie Ordinary People one night when he took time out from his stalking routine that the Dakota and the movie Ordinary People should have broke him off and we and realize what a horrible thing he was about to overwhelmed by his homicidal thoughts he called his wife Gloria back in Hawaii he revealed that he was planning to kill John Lennon but that her love Boreal remembering the bizarre ritual he had performed before he left on a Lulu begged her husband to come home Chapman return to Hawaii immediately in the confines of their apartment once begun the major hold it's telling her anyone could shoot anyone even though he had put the gun in her hand and said this is the gun that I was going to kill John Lennon with she was still in a State of Shock and disbelief and when a couple of weeks later he said he was going back to New York but he had gotten rid of the gun he had thrown it into the ocean she believed him glory and never called the police when Chapman again boarded the plane to New York the gun was in the suitcase he checked on to the flight FedEx afternoon in Manhattan you stop at a record store to buy Lenin's new Double Fantasy album on the morning of December 8th Chapman woke up early before he left hotel and went to a bookstore but he bought a new copy of The Catcher in the Rye armed with the book The Lennon album and a gun beneath his coat Chaplin walk to the Dakota when he arrived already lingering in front of the building Lennon would typically leave for the front entrance stopping to sign autographs on the way Jacqueline against the gargoyle studded railing of the Dakota reading his book he told the other fans he had come all the way from Hawaii just to get Lennon's autograph around 5 p.m. Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono emerged on our way to a recording session is lemon walked through the crowd Chapman approached him and requested an autograph blood Ensign Chapman's album is that all do you want anything Chapman simply thank you the Rockstar climbed into a waiting limo and drove away Mark was totally taken aback and how decent and nice and friendly little lies Chapman place to signed album on a narrow ledge near the door man he said do me a favor and remember where I put that because you would want to know the crowd thrilled to have caught a glimpse of the famous began to disperse all the chapel that's when he talked about those little gargoyles on the side of the building the coming weeks personify demons with chai along with his dark little Eagle child inside push him over the edge for 5 hours at 10:50 p.m. the limo pulled up to the curb in front of the Lenin turn Chapman in the gonidis back crouched combat-style and pulled the trigger five times Brennan gasps I've been shot staggered into Gorman's office and collapsed in a pool of blood the door man grabbed Chapman's arm the gun fell to the concrete he backed Chapman to leave Chapman answered but where would I go play the gunman pulled The Catcher in the Rye out of his pocket then stood there reading while he waited for police it would be absurd to blame JD Salinger in novel The Catcher in the Rye for inspiring the murder of John Lennon know where does the book Advocates talking or murdering celebrities and the clues to the fantasies of Linens assassin closures adolescent hero Holden Caulfield imagines killing off various people he considers phonies in one scene Holden sees himself shooting a pimp who had punched him and still in his money in that other seeing a prep school my looks at a hunting hat hold of this wedding and says that's a deer shooting hat like it is says holding this is a people shooting hat I shoot people in this hat Challengers hero never acts out his fantasies Mark David Chapman did Glenn Chapman is arrested he tells police to take his copy of The Catcher in the Rye because it is his statement that's next year on a n e New York City Police Officer Jim Moran had just settled a domestic dispute but he received the radio called shots have been fired a few blocks away at the Dakota apartment building it was a crowd already assembled in front of the Dakota and they were saying it was John Lennon another word for support five shots bleeding profusely and barely recognizable it was no time to wait for an ambulance a creepy guy in 15-20 minutes so the fastest way is to take my radio car do off search County lemon out of the Dakota vestibule they were holding him like show the high and his face was up and the blood was coming out of his mouth so I knew it was a serious wound and put him in the back seat of the car I like Bollywood put him in the backseat I asked Are You John Lennon pay nodded his head and said yes William and his partner race 11 to Roosevelt Hospital 15 blocks away officer Spiro remained at the crime scene where onlookers were pointing at a young man standing quietly in the archway of the Dakota Spyro order the young man to put his hands against the wall while he scanned the area for other sugar at that point somebody yells me know he's the only guy and it was the doorman Jose and he said he shot John Lennon Spyro could see the a man was frightened and then he said don't let anybody near me cuz she saw a crowd Gathering outside on the on the sidewalk so I said nobody's going to hurt you don't worry about it we're going to get you out of here the officer Place Chapman under arrest Chapman's dark coats and fur hat laying on the ground next to him when I had cuff him and we were going to take him to the station how she's I said is this your clothing on Brown and he said yes. That's my clothing and my book is mine to take the book on the inside cover of the book Chapman had inscribed to Holden Caulfield from hold Caulfield this is my statement you got to read Catcher in the Rye was what he was telling me why we were together that night the book will tell you the reasons why I did this Spyro and his partner drove Chapman to the Precinct detective you're like for questioning I Do by Roosevelt Hospital doctors had rushed lemon into a trauma room Ace Hardware still beating but he had no blood pressure the doctors could hardly believe who they were treating the immediate response of all of the staff was this couldn't be this doesn't look like John Lennon it's not the John Lennon that I'm used to seeing by Janie and Jack Yoko Ono was their hand wallets in the ID card said John Lennon the doctors gave him massive blood transfusions but they weren't helping he was bleeding for the major blood vessels in his chest in a final desperate effort to save surgeons open this chest dr.lim held the former Beatles heart in his hands it was my job to massage the heart there was no ability to salvage the blood vessels that had horribly damaged by the bullets Lennon's wounds were fake old he was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. Lennon was 40 years old there were a lot of people that were crying in the emergency department that day people didn't might know what to do or how to respond the staff spend a lot of time supporting themselves our treatment didn't end when we ceased resuscitating we still had to tell no no no Billings job to tell Lennon's wife she was a widow I walked in the room and told her in the best way that I could fit in spite of all of our efforts John Lennon had died Yoko Ono did not accept that a long. Of time several minutes she became quite upset and said you're lying to me this can't possibly be true music executive David Geffen was in the waiting room with Yoko Ono the recordings with the letters just hours earlier when he heard the news he called Lennon the seventeen-year-old son Julian in England running chant and former Beatle Paul McCartney Yoko Ono told willing to wait to make a public announcement until she could go home to tell her five-year-old son Shawn that his father had died later that night dr.lin broke the news to the world but Rock and Roll Legends John Lennon what's that as grief-stricken fans began gathering in front of Roosevelt Hospital suspect Mark David Chapman underwent questioning at the 20th Precinct it was less than two hours after John Lennon was Randstad when Chapman dictated inside the three-page confession the following are excerpts from it I never wanted to hurt anybody my friends will tell you that I have two parts of me. part is very kind I have a small part of me that cannot understand the world and what goes on in it I did not want to kill anybody and I really don't know why I did it I have nothing against John Lennon or anything he has done the way of music or personal beliefs I'm sure the big part of me is Holden Caulfield the small part of me must be the devil Chapman ended his can session by saying how sorry he felt for the doorman at the Dakota but he said to me would you please go back to the Dakota when you see Jose the doorman to apologize to him I'm saying wow you know where is this guy coming from as far as I'm concerned and now all of a sudden he's sorry before Chapman could make his one phone call his wife Gloria who had already heard the news called the precinct and first Chapman refused to speak with her it would take the call only after officer Spiro told her what had happened so I said hi this is us why are on the police officer the rest of your husband and he's all right and he's not hurt and I he's been arrested for kill Spyro handed the phone to Chapman he remain calm and Lucid he told Gloria to call the police to protect her from the press that would be humming it after his phone call the police brought Chapman to Central downtown where they took his fingerprints mugshots and filled out that arrest for Chapman's arraignment was scheduled for the following afternoon this arrest was definitely the most exciting arrest that I have ever made. nothing that I wish was that John Lennon lived a sentiment shared by millions a Los Angeles Legends best friend Elliot Mintz at brush to catch the last flight to New York when he heard someone I've been shot at the Dakota he had a strong suspicion it was John Lennon he wasn't prepared for what he heard next in the sky and an hour aboard the plane I saw two flight attendants rushing out from the cockpit in tears and one of them says did they kill John Lennon So I have the next four hours to myself in the Cocoon of the cabin to absorb that experience he was my best friend by 1 a.m. on the night of the shooting a crowd of nearly a thousand have gathered outside the Dakota do a quiet reserved I wish there was a sad moment Play Led candles from crime and saying Lennon and Beatles songs the Buildings gave the game of makeshift Shrine covered in flowers pictures and letters grown men and women next to teenager crying seeing police officers With Tears in their eyes sting people laying wreaths and flowers and photographs at the gate made complete sense he'd given them everything he had in parks and stadiums throughout the world on broadcast from New York to Washington to Liverpool mourners paid tribute to John Lennon in the London's bedroom at the Dakota men's set with Yoko Ono listening to the commotion above sink along with the radios that were just playing their music and his music and Beatle music it resonated is if you were in a cathedral and a church Lennon's former bandmates Ringo Starr's who derived the Dakota he walked into the bedroom and he looked at her and you sitting exactly how you feel and in yoku's inimitable way she looked back at him and said no you don't blood and was cremated privately and his please take him to an undisclosed location Yoko Ono invited mourners to participate from wherever they were in the world and a 10-minute silent visual for the rock star whose greatest pleasure in recent years I've become his fan his son was only five years old and it was the joy of his life that he had just begun to establish relationship with his 16 17 year old son Julian is there going to be at the Dakota give me the fans who mourn John Lennon's death the most wear those who grew up with the Beatles Mark David Chapman had been one of those fans at the story of his childhood describe his mother's obsession with him that story when American Justice returns in the moment on December 9th 1980 New York City Police and much of the Raskin why Mark David Chapman that killed rock legend John Lennon as police looked in the chapmans passed it emerged that his childhood was defined both by his obsession with John Lennon and his is obsession with him combined they were the key to understanding what drove Chapman to stalk and murder the idol of his youth born in Fort Worth Texas in 1955 Chapman moved with his family to Decatur Georgia a suburb of Atlanta where he and his younger sister grew up and attended the Presbyterian Church Chapman's father gave him his first rock and roll album Meet The Beatles when he was 9 years old like millions of Americans and he covered his bedroom walls with Beatles posters and learn to play the guitar even cut the ends off his toy soldiers and replace them I'm going to get your guitars John Lennon was Mark's favorite Beatle the boy looked up to him with a god-like faith the Rockstar song about peace love and a perfect world Jung believed it all his mother a head nurse frequently took advantage of her son by demanding that young Mark fend off the sexual advances of her husband his mother is no longer wanted anything to do with the man sexually rejected his advances at which point she would turn against him and start screaming for Mark to come into the room and fight his own father Mark was on her like coerced into becoming his mother's prayer after he was also forced to deal with her allegedly seductive Behavior toward him up until the time that Mark was like 14 it would be awake in the morning to find his mother in bed next to him his mother would tell them things like the only reason that I married your father was to have you for my child Chapman turned into a lonely teenager who set of his room playing his Beatles records and / 4 imaginary concerts for the legendary looking people who lived in the walls of his room inspired by The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Chapman started using drugs in marijuana and LSD if the Beatles didn't he figured it must be a good thing in the spring of 1971 while visiting his grandmother in Florida Chapman took LSD with some other teenagers he had met at the beach he was later devastated to discover that they had stolen the money out of his wallet that night at his grandmother's house about to get off drugs and the Beatles and start living a clean Christian Life he returned to Georgia 2 weeks later with a new identity becomes an antique Bugatti doesn't wear blue jeans anymore tennis shoes or anything currently in the Bible around with him the Beatles lyrics wizard once inspired am now infuriated him Chapman told his friends that Lenin's 1971 imagine was Communist imagine there's no Heaven disgusted him Mark's friends remember him playing his guitar and singing Imagine John Lennon is dead I think that Mark subconsciously plotted to murder of John Lennon from the age of 15 I he was so offended when John Lennon begin mocking Christianity really really really killing the only solid identity that he ever felt he had other than this sort of peripheral fifth Beatle kind of kid we night mode the kids in Jesus did Albert McDonald's Chapman except Lenin's apology for his statement that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Jesus Christ is a person or whatever it is I said what I said was wrong After High School Chapman enrolled at a fundamentalist Christian College in Tennessee but his grades were poor and he suffered severe bouts of depression as he realized you could never live up to his mother's unrealistic expectations of him what was since his earliest childhood told by his mother that he could be anyone there could be anything he was a great was destined to be great just to realize did he was an ordinary mortal lose more than then take it almost there in early 1977 the 22 year-old Chapman sold all his possessions and bought a one-way ticket to Hawaii planning to have a paradise and then commits suicide again Chapman failed he tried to kill himself by breathing through a plastic vacuum cleaner hose attached to the exhaust pipe of a rental-car the hose melted from the Heat the exhaust himself into a hospital where he was treated briefly for depression then released he soon met a young travel agent named the daughter of wealthy Japanese Baker from the Wahoo and Gloria married in 1979 the following year Chapman's parents were divorced and his mother followed him to Hawaii his mother had moved to Honolulu and was dating all these younger men and making him sort of be responsible for her in some way is extremely frustrated by that angry at her unable to confront his mother Chapman instead terrorized his wife by holding off the edge of the bed leave their high-rise apartment and smashing their records with a hammer it began talking to his imaginary little people again it was then that he discovered JD salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye he felt an overwhelming kinship with holding gold filled with troubled teen who finds the adult world is full of phonies Abreva field how what it was saying what was saying to to society are Universe of lost phony people books on afternoon at the library Chapman thumb through a book about his one-time hero and greatest foe John Lennon wrote the book paradoxically said day at a time and shortly thereafter I was to think about killing John Lennon entrapment size Lennon was the ultimate funny Chapman read that the ex-beatle was a millionaire who owns several palatial homes I remember this being so gentle just so totally angry and just wiped out by the fact that he had all these and so does living off the fat of the land and I really was in such turmoil most people can resist the urge to do physical harm to that person who is the object but there's something hatred but there are others who just let themselves get taken in little by little more and more inspired by Holden Caulfield Chapman hatched a plan to rid the world of a phone and become somebody drug use attempted suicide a mother's psychological abuse no one could argue Chapman was anything but a deeply troubled young man now that he's been charged with murder the questions facing American Justice work was he competent to stand trial and was he legally sane that's next on the morning after John Lennon's murderer David Chapman Santana holding cell at the Manhattan Criminal Courts Building waiting to be arraigned you have not slept in the same clothes he had one when he shot Lennon I still smelled like gunpowder Robert adlerberg his court-appointed attorney was a veteran of more than 20 and Saturday cases would be another one was not there with it he was not playing with a full deck of cards in Courtside liberg requested the Chapman be taking the Bellevue Hospital to determine if he was competent to stand trial he also want to Chapman held under a suicide watch the judge agreed kybella dr. Naomi Goldstein reported that Chapman was exhausted depressed and tearful at times but did not save him suicidal piece of evidence of hallucinations or delusions determined that he was competent to stand trial based on the findings a court date was set for John Lennon's killer the pressure of this highly publicized case became too much for Chapman's attorney to handle the judge allowed him to quit two weeks after the arraignment I was getting death threats from some Looney Tunes out there that I can recall one quote there Chap and gets off you're going to meet John Lennon another lawyer Jonathan marks took over Gatlinburg marks also experienced harassment but stood by his decision to represent shut them scared soft-spoken apparently humble young man very articulate spoke with a very pleasant southern accent it was obvious from the very first minute of that the only defense not to this case would be a psychiatric what are the plea of Not Guilty by reason of insanity he started to develop a strategy for defending Chapman I think that it was in part of a suicide because he leave that in killing John Lennon the bad aspects of his personality would be killed and what will be left would be a pure Holden Caulfield and he also felt that after a killing John Lennon he would be free of pain it was very bizarre and and and very crazy the prosecution plan to argue that Chapman killed Lennon for one simple reason become famous but he knew what he had done was wrong and therefore he was by the definition of American Justice same a psychiatrist for the prosecution was ready to testify the Chapman knew that if he pulled trigger Lennon would die and that Chapman wanted to be clocked the court would never have to weigh the insanity issue on June 8th 1981 exactly 6 months after the murder and just two weeks before his trial date Chapman against the advice of his lawyer changed his plea to guilty it is God's will that he accept responsibility for intentionally killing John Lennon which is what he did he was afraid that the witnesses who came in to testify on his behalf would be at risk they would be vilified is that the many hundreds of thousands of people who were grieving John Lennon's death would come after them Chapman request but his lawyer work out a deal with the prosecutor and the judge on June 22nd 1981 Chapman and her display guilty of murder in the second degree judge Dennis Edwards gave Chapman the chance to make a statement wearing a bulletproof vest Chapman slowly Rose and red from The Catcher in the Rye I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game and this big field of rye thousands of little kids and nobody's around nobody big I mean except me and I'm standing on the edge of some crazy Cliff I mean if they're running and they don't look like with her go I have to come out from somewhere and catch them that's all I do all day I just be The Catcher in the Rye and all judge Edwards sentenced Chapman to 20 years to life at a Correctional Facility he said the maximum sentence of 25 years to life was inappropriate since Chapman pleaded guilty he also recommended the Chapman receive psychiatric treatment in prison certainly I was not here with the decision night I was very very sad but seeing that somebody actually being so sad to prison particularly in these circumstances for life and I really got to like Mark Chapman pennswood oh Yoko Ono did not attend the court proceedings and refused to talk to the Press about her husband's murderer Ono had a memorial created on the side in Central Park where she in and had taken their last walk together she called it Strawberry Fields thank you very much how to jump is Jones Memorial and you made it happen again thank you a mosaic Circle embedded into the walkway near the entrance Reid simply imagine yokudan want to Graceland you couldn't want a grave you're going to want to place where people would chisel out a piece of Jim Morrison's headstone she wanted the thoughts to be more something from The Head and the Heart not as a like this item Lennon's assassin meantime would seek his own Redemption at the Attica prison which like the man he killed was loaded with symbolism from his youth that's next on American Justice returns with the conclusion of the John Lennon assassination Attica Correctional Facility where Mark David Chapman lives and where he likely remain for the rest of his life play John Lennon's killer first learned that he was being sent to Attica side of the bloodiest prison Revolt in US history he panicked he knew that Lennon's first concert after immigrating to the US what's the benefit for Atticus survivors and victims families he was certain he would be a Marked Man at the prison but prison officials what about to let Chapman mixed with the other inmates he was assigned to the prison disciplinary going to be running of the notorious murderers are kept under close supervision 23 hours a day even got a job as a porter starting work every day at 6:30 a.m. cleaning floors collecting laundry and assisting the kitchen staff as ordered by the judge Chapman did receive occasional psychiatric care in the form of both counseling and drugs but he never put much stock in it and I believe that he was possessed by demons he has undergone a couple of episodes in which he has either withdrawn and Seth and his fellow for weeks and months at a time cut over his head rocking back and forth listening to rock and roll music than some of speaking in demonic tongues Kaplan claims that he had the last of his demons exercised by a Baptist Minister on December 8th 1987 the 7th anniversary of London's murder The Minister's started with a makeshift communion using a hamburger bun and the carton of apple juice he told Chapman to pray and left a genuine exorcism is a grinding inside that you can almost feel it to its you can feel these entities when you really feel them as when it coming out field since then he has refused psychiatric treatment he says he doesn't need it and is content to live with his remorse and his own explanation of what happened how was choking I was suffocating and that nobody knows it's still not an excuse to kill another man and I regret it Kaplan believes he had temporary schizophrenia at the time he stalked and killed John Lennon I think to an extent he he found it convenient to be schizophrenic I think that the this happens in and probably more cases than we care to realize where people commit the act of murder that they they seek the cover of Madness since Chapman has rejected medication or treatment no one may ever know the true origin of his actions but his confessed reason for killing Lennon is clear kill John Lennon because I couldn't handle being a nobody Chapman got his wish he is one of the most infamous killers in the world over the years he has received thousands of letters mostly death threats one anonymous are from Royal Oak Michigan periodically sends Chapman letters saying the day you get out of prison is the day you die piece aware of the possibility that his own life would be ended by play John Lennon order for Beatle fan if you ever let prison The Prisoner reads all of his mail and has developed a detailed filing system classifying letters with headings including hey Christian and even nutcase in the early eighties Chapman wrote to the officer who arrested him Stephen Spiro he wrote me approximately 4 letters from prison in the last letter was one statement read The Catcher in the in the mid eighties Chapman Road to author JD Salinger to apologize his letter said it's my fault I crawled in found my pseudo self Within These Pages Salinger did not receive the one person who has stood by Chapman through the years is his wife Gloria I'm Christian and I believe that forgiveness I've always felt that I'm a very forgiving person and I have not yet not forgiven Mark for any thing he's done Gloria visits regularly and a couple share today conjugal visits four times a year he helps her husband publisher Christian newsletter for fellow inmates Chapman writes all of the stories he also produces Christian videos for inmate with the help of a prison minister other than three minor infraction since 1989 Chapman is considered a model prisoner he's up for parole in the year 2000 but his chances for release are Slim I don't think Mark Chapman will ever the streets again I think he's in the same category is Sirhan Sirhan for killing Robert Kennedy it's too much of a political football this provides some salads for those who still born the loss of John Lennon I think it's a shame that anybody even knows the guy's name and I certainly wouldn't want to see him free and and enjoying his life again when he's taken away so much for so many people I think you should be punished forever I think you will be Mark believes for whatever reason that it is his Destiny to die in prison Mike really feels it that God has forgiven him for this and maybe those really feel that he's going to go to heaven when he dies every year Lennon's Widow friends and fans commemorate John Lennon on his birthday October not the day of his murder I would like us to remember and celebrate his birthday as a day of love because he was a man of love and because love is matching did at this time in our lives happy birthday John people look at the Dakota and they sell as for John Lennon died and I reminded that switch I'm not in love Chapman confided to his defense attorney that before he killed John Lennon he had put together a so-called hit list they should like Lenin he considered to be fun is the list included talk show host Johnny Carson Anchorman Walter Cronkite and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Justice Chapman claimed he was inspired by The Catcher in the Rye can you send this cable on claiming they were inspired by both Chapman and the Salinger novel John Hinckley jr. was coming in a copy of the book when he shot and nearly killed anyone and Robert John Bardo had the book him when he stalked and murdered actress Rebecca Schaeffer in 1989 the u.s. Secret Service interview in Chapman a 1991 as part of the study of celebrity stalkers he told officials he thought he was mr. nobody he killed the biggest somebody on Earth I'm Bill Kurtis next time for another episode of American Justice you're on a n e
