Incoming Panthers interested in Science Research

Science Research is a year-long elective that prepares you for the Palos Verdes Peninsula Science and Engineering Fair (PVPSEF) in February. Instead of meeting with students every day in a normal class setting, students meet 1-on-1 with Ms. Klose, the Science Research Advisor. In these meetings, Ms. Klose will help you develop, plan and carry out an investigation, and present your results at the science fair.

You can choose any area of science you're interested in! Psychology, Robotics, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Astronomy... you name it! Ms. Klose will work with you to connect you to experts in the field, and if you do well your first year, she can help you apply to internships and possibly even work alongside researchers in a lab or field setting!

This class also benefits students who take the class more than one year. That way you can apply your skills that you learned your first year to the second year. You can decide to work on your own, or work in a group of up to three people.

After the PVPSEF, the top 13 projects from Peninsula will advance to the LA County Science and Engineering Fair, and then maybe to the State or International Level! There are many scholarships along the way as well, and Ms. Klose can help you apply for grants or other scholarships during the school year.

This course is highly recommended for students who would like to pursue a career in STEM. Pretty much every science degree will require you to conduct your own research, and so this class focuses on developing those skills to prepare you for future classes and maybe even your future career.

Science Research is also collaborative. Veteran students work closely with first year researchers to help them develop a project and can advise younger researchers with their work.

If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Klose directly at [email protected].

Beginning of School Year 2020-2021

Welcome researchers and scientists!

My name is Ms. Klose and you are currently enrolled in Chemistry and/or Science Research with me. I'm excited to try new teaching techniques and connect with you students!

If you are enrolled in Chemistry 1:
In the near future, I will no longer be sending out links to attend my class. You simply will log in to your Chemistry Team and then click the "Join Now" button on the top right to join class at the appropriate time. I just had to do this because the office hasn't set up my team for me yet. For now, use the link to attend class tomorrow.
You will be entered into the lobby upon arrival, and then I will admit you into class. This is to ensure that we don't have any unwanted guests in our meeting. Please make sure that you are logged in to Teams (through a computer or a phone) so you can access my class on time.

Again, I will only be sending out links for class until my Teams is populated by the counseling office/the district. Once my Teams has all of my students in their appropriate classes, then joining class should not be as difficult. 🙂

If you are enrolled in Science Research: I am adding students individually to my Microsoft Team. You should be seeing communications from me there already. If you have not yet been added to the PVPHS Science Research Team, all I need is your student ID. You may have not been on my roster when I populated the Team.
  •  If this is your FIRST YEAR doing research, I will be holding two informational meeting:
    •  Monday 8/31: during 6th period (1:55-2:45)
    • Monday 8/31: after school from 2:50-3:40.
    • I highly recommend that you attend one of these meetings, but if there is a conflict, the meeting will be recorded. Please let me know if you have a conflict ahead of time.
  • If this you are a VETERAN researcher, I will be holding two informational meetings:
    • Thursday 9/3: during 6th period (1:55-2:45)
    • Friday 9/4: after school from 2:50-3:40.
    • I highly recommend that you attend one of these meetings, but if there is a conflict, the meeting will be recorded. Please let me know if you have a conflict ahead of time.
Please let me know if you have any questions. I know that there is a lot of confusion but I'm sure that once things are up and running, we will smooth out any technical difficulties.
