9th Grade Counseling Services Overview

During the freshmen year it is essential to establish a strong academic foundation. Most students experience a new level of academic challenge when they begin their high school course work. As a department we have made it our goal to support students in the transition process and have focused our 9th grade guidance curriculum on bolstering academic success.

Freshman Group Guidance Lesson: The Freshman Foundation

In our "Freshman Foundation" guidance lesson students will discuss:
  • Learning styles and strategies
  • Available support resources on our campus
  • Graduation requirements

The Powerpoint presentation for this lesson is available on the download page.

Freshman Individual Conference

During the spring semester all 9th graders will meet individual with their counselor in order to review their academic progress and set up their schedule for 10th grade.

Orientation for the parents of freshman

At the beginning of each school year the counseling department hosts an orientation for the parents of freshmen students. This presentation will cover an overview of our department, how students can contact their counselors, attendance policies, discipline policies, and much more. The time and location of this presentation will be communicated to parents through the Daily Announcements and direct email.

Additional Support:

Peer Mentoring: Through the Link Crew Program all 9th grade students are connected to an upper classmen peer mentor/Link Leader to help support them as they transition to high school.

Lunchtime Tutoring: National Honors Society students are available in the Library at lunch to tutor in any subject. To coordinate tutoring please contact Mr. Parsons in S41 or at: parsonsr@pvpusd.net

Peer Tutor Referral List: A list of current students who offer tutoring is available at the front counter in the Counseling Office. The list provides their contact info and area of expertise. It is your responsibility to contact the tutor and coordinate a meeting time and payment.
