Opting Out of EL Support Classes
In order to meet state requirements, PVPHS will be implementing both designated and integrated language supports for all English Learners. All students classified as English Learners will be offered designated support class(es) during the school day. PVPHS believes that these support classes will benefit your child and are specifically designed to help your child obtain English language proficiency as well as acquire grade-level content. However, you have the legal right to opt your child out of the ELD program.

Please contact Associate Principal Dr. Panagos ([email protected]) for information about opting out of EL support classes.

English Learners Assessments

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)
The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) is the successor to the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). Beginning in 2017–18, the ELPAC became the required state test for English language proficiency (ELP) that must be given to students whose primary language is other than English.

State and federal law require that local educational agencies administer a state test of ELP to eligible students in kindergarten (or year one of a two-year kindergarten program, sometimes referred to as T-K) through grade twelve. The ELPAC is aligned with California’s 2012 English Language Development Standards, and is comprised of two separate ELP assessments:
  • I-ELPAC Assessment (IA)—an initial identification of students as English learners
  • S-ELPAC Assessment (SA)—an annual summative assessment to measure an English learner's progress in learning English and to identify the student's ELP level

i-Ready
This year, PVPUSD is implementing i‐Ready, an online assessment program, as one of four criteria used to determine an English Learner (EL) student's readiness for Reclassification to Fluent English Proficient (RFEP). The i-Ready assessment will be administered three times throughout the academic year: September, January/February and May. i‐Ready’s adaptive test identifies students’ strengths and weaknesses in reading. The reading diagnostic assesses skills in the following areas, or domains:
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Phonics
  • High‐Frequency Words
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension: Literature
  • Comprehension: Informational Text
