Assignments For This Week:
  1. Revise and Improve a THIRD College Application Essays (60 points)
    • After completing this assignment, you should have THREE college application essays that are very close to being a final draft.
    • The assignment:
      • Select one of your college application essay rough drafts (could be a PIQ or a Common App essay....either is fine).  Do not delete the rough draft because you will be turning in the rough draft along with the new revised & improved essay.
      • Revise this rough draft essay and get it closer to being a final draft
      • Keep in mind the length of your essay:
        • UC PIQs should be a maximum of 350 words
        • Common App essays should be between 250 and 650 words (so if you should aim for 500 to 600 words.... I would not suggest submitting an essay with only 250 words unless it is absolutely amazing with only 250 words)
      • Moving an essay from rough draft to final draft takes time and requires reading the essay over and over many times.
      • Have someone proof read your essay for you and give you comments.  This will help you in improving upon your essay.
    • Submit BOTH your rough draft essay AND your revised essay to Schoology by Friday 5/22 at midnight.

Monday - April 6

I hope you all had a restful spring break and are staying healthy.  As you know, it looks like we will not return to school this year.  I know that this is very disappointing and that there are so many things that we will all miss because of it.  I know that I will miss seeing each of you at school and talking with you every day.

In the weeks ahead I want AVID to be a real resource for you.  I have brainstormed ways that AVID can help you be most productive and successful in the months ahead.  There are basically two major areas that I want us to focus on:
  1. Current School Work
    • School closure does not mean that school is over for the year.  I know that Pen High's teachers are still assigning work and grading this work.
    • Therefore, my plans for AVID are designed to help you maximize success in your content classes.
  2. College Applications at Start of Senior Year
    • In 5 months you will be seniors and starting your college applications FOR REAL.
    • In the months ahead, I am going to give AVID assignments to help prepare you for these applications and what they will require.
AVID Weekly Schedule
For the remaining weeks of school this year, you will be doing a variety of activities geared towards the two goals mentioned above.  However, there will be two assignments that you will do EVERY week and these will be due every Friday by 3:00 pm.
  1. Agenda Book Check - 10 points (EVERY TUESDAY)
    • Every Tuesday you will upload photos of your agenda book to Schoology for:
      • The current week
      • The past week
    • For example, next Monday is 4/13.  You will take a photos of your agenda book showing the week of 4/13 and the week before which is the week of 4/6
    • Agenda book will be graded on how complete it is:
      • every class should be listed
      • assignments should be clear to read
      • due dates should be specified
      • zoom meeting with teachers should be included
    • Upload to Schoology.com
  2. Prep Work for Content Classes (DUE BY FRIDAY EVERY WEEK)
    • To help you stay focused in your content classes, you will choose from ONE of the following:  Each will be worth 30 points
      • A) Study Guide
        • create a thorough and detailed study guide for material in one of your content classes
        • See this link for how to create a great study guide:  LINK
      • B) Focused Notes
        • take detailed focused notes from a reading or a zoom meeting lecture with a teacher.
        • These notes should have evidence of repetition.
      • C) Virtual AVID Tutorial via Zoom
        • I will be setting up virtual tutorials with our AVID tutors
        • Our AVID 11 tutorial window will be Wednesdays from 12:00 to 3:00 and will have 50 minute sessions running within this window.  This week I am aiming to do a trial run of virtual tutorials on Friday (there will not be tutorial offered on Wednesday this week).
        • Students will still need to do a TRF and come prepared to the virtual tutorial.
AVID Virtual Tutorials
  • As mentioned above, I am going to try setting up virtual tutorials for those students that are interested.  Several of our AVID tutors are interested in running these sessions.
  • We will run a practice tutorial on Friday of this week to see how it goes.
  • If you are not interested, then you can do one of the other 2 options listed above that will help you prepare for your content classes (study guide or focused notes)
