AUDITION INFORMATION
Auditions:
Before you are allowed to audition, you must turn in the following forms:
- Audition Form (Online) and Conflict Calendar (part of the online audition form), due December 6 @7pm
- Emergency Form & Grade Verification Form (or Aeries grade printout) – Hard copies turned in at the audition check-in
All auditioners must participate in the dance and vocal auditions.
DANCE AUDITIONS (12/9 @ 4pm, in the PAC)
(PLEASE ARRIVE BY 3:50p TO GET CHECKED IN SO WE CAN BEGIN PROMPTLY AT 4PM)
All auditioners must participate in the dance audition. Please be on time, and come prepared – checked in, dressed, stretched out and ready to go. Our assistant choreographer will teach the entire group a brief dance routine, and we will move through the auditioners in small groups.
VOCAL AUDITIONS (12/11 @ 4pm, in S33 – The Choir Room)
Come prepared – as a group, auditioners will be warmed up by Mr. Doctor in the vocal room and we will then hear auditioners individually. You may only sing once.
Students will sing 16-32 bars, or similar cut, of any show tune (you may not sing a song from ONCE UPON A MATTRESS).
You must bring in a karaoke/piano track on your phone or other device. If assistance is needed, please contact Mr Cohen by December 3.
CALLBACKS (12/18 in The PAC)
Not all will be called back. Callbacks are for the purpose of determining many of the principal / featured roles in the show. Students may be provided sides to read for some of the roles for which they have been called back. If you are called back, that does not guarantee that you will be cast in the show. If you are not called back, that does not guarantee that you will not be cast in the show.
Additionally, students may be asked to sing pieces from Once Upon A Mattress or taught an additional dance combination to present at the Callback.

Principal Roles
Prince Dauntless — A handsome, young prince who desperately wants to get married, but is prevented by his mother's strict tests that she gives to all potential candidates.
Role: Principal Sex: M Voice: Baritone (A3 to E4)
Princess Winnifred the Woebegone — An outspoken, strong, and optimistic princess from the swamp lands. She also wants to get married, but must go through the queen's unfair test as well.
Role: Principal Sex: F Voice: Belt (A3 to D♭ 5)
Queen Aggravain — The loud, talkative woman who really rules the country. She is trying to keep her son, Prince Dauntless, from getting married.
Role: Principal Sex: F Voice: Alto (A3 to B4)
Jester — An energetic and peppy man who is the King's right-hand man and assists him with every endeavor. The Jester also plots with the Minstrel to spoil the Queen's plans.
Role: Supporting Sex: M or F Voice: Tenor (D♭ 3 to A♭ 4) Dancing: Heavy
King Sextimus the Silent — A kind, expressive, and playful man who is silent due to a curse placed upon him by a witch before the birth of Dauntless. He likes to chase girls through the corridors of the castle.

Lady Larken — A beautiful woman who desperately wants to marry Sir Harry because she is pregnant with his baby. She tries to flee the Kingdom after having an argument with Sir Harry, but is convinced by Winnifred to reunite with Sir Harry. Role: Supporting Sex: F Voice: Soprano (D♭ 4 to A♭ 5)
Minstrel — The handsome narrator of the story. He becomes smitten with Lady
Larken and tries to persuade her to flee to Normandy with him. He and the Jester also join forces to stop the Queen's plans.
Role: Supporting Sex: M Voice: Tenor (D3 to A♭ 4)
Sir Harry — The macho, romantic knight who decides to leave the kingdom to search for a princess. Harry cannot marry Lady Larken until Prince Dauntless has found a suitable bride.

Wizard — The egotistical, ex-performer who directly serves the Queen.

Production Staff and Crew Information
PRODUCTION CREW POSITIONS
Note: In general, all students on stage crew participate in the construction of the set. Some students may be staffed into multiple departments.
Assistant Director(s) – 2-3 chosen. Must be 10th,11th or 12th grader. AD’s participate in the audition and casting process and work alongside Mr Cohen throughout the rehearsal process. AD’s take blocking notes, work with actors on their character development process, run some of the rehearsals and provide additional support to cast in their preparation, before transitioning to be House Managers.
Stage Manager – 1 or 2 chosen. Must be 11th or 12th grader, with at least two productions on Stage Crew experience required in at least two different departments is required. The SM(s) work(s) with Mr Cohen in helping to lead the stage crew through the production process. They deal with much of the production business and, with their ASM’s, oversee most of production. During the rehearsal process, they track the technical elements that are being introduced to the staging to ensure prop and costume lists are up to date. The Stage Manager is expected to be a part of the crew interview process.
Assistant Stage Manager/Crew Leads – 2-5 chosen. Must be 10th,11th or 12th grader, at least one production on Stage Crew experience required. ASMs work with the SM and Mr Cohen to help make sure that the staging side of production is in coordination with the technical side. Maintaining prop lists, managing small crew departments and build groups and house management fall under the purview of the ASM’s. As Department leads, ASM’s will are expected to be a part of the crew interview process.
Dramaturgs – 1-3 chosen. A dramaturg is the expert on the show, conducting in-depth research about the text and the playwright to understand references made in the script. This may include additional research of any source material used in the creation of the show, consulting on design, directing or acting choices. Dramaturgs are at most cast calls.
Assistant Director, Stage Manager, ASM & Dramaturg Online Applications, Due November 22
Lighting – 3-6 chosen. All grades. Members of the lighting crew will learn about how our lighting system works and about the concepts of lighting design and implementation. Student lighting crew will work with the lighting designer and electrician team from StreetLite, LLC on the light hang and focus days. 1-2 students from lighting crew will run the light board during performances.
Sound – 3-6 chosen. All grades. Members of the sound crew will learn about how our sound system and about the concepts of design and implementation. Student sound crew will receive training in mixing and microphone maintenance. Two students will be working in the sound booth during performances mixing and cue-ing the show. In addition, an A3 from sound crew will work backstage as additional microphone support.
Props – 2-8 chosen. All grades. Working with an AD and a crew lead, the Props team will build and maintain a props list for the production. They will built or coordinate acquisition of props from off campus. As props are brought in, they will work to organize and track props and provide prop support to cast.
Publicity – 2-8 chosen. All grades. Working with a crew lead, the publicity helps to implement the publicity plan for the production; including, but not limited to poster/program/artwork design, advertising creation and trailer creation. Experience with Adobe software is a plus, though not a requirement.
Costumes – 2-8 chosen. All grades. Working with a crew lead, the costume crew helps to track costume needs of actors. Working with our costume designer, they help to track and maintain costume pieces throughout the tech and performance weeks, as well as help with makeup/hair design and implementation. Basic sewing skills are a plus, but not a must.
Running/Deck Crew – 1-8 chosen. All grades. Running/Deck crew are the most (in)visible members of our stage crew. They are the students who you (don’t) see moving set pieces during blackouts. Other members of the backstage crew may be recruited into the Running Crew.
Film/Video Crew – 2-6 chosen. All grades. A group of students will be asked with supporting Publicity crew with any video used for advertising, recording our production and running a possible live stream of the production. Experience with Adobe software is a plus, though not a requirement.
Set Construction Crew – All grades. At PVPHS we build our own set pieces. Working with Mr. Cohen, the entire stage crew is involved in this process. Each cast member will also be required to work at least one day of set construction. Depending on interest and number of crew applications some members may be brought in as set construction only. If anyone has the experience and interest, a construction foreperson will be assigned.
